December 2010 3rd Visit to Hospital - Optic Nerve Sheath Fenestration

Between September and December of 2010, Stephanie's intracranial pressure continued to increase again and her lumbar puncture in November resulted in an opening pressure of 30.2 cm H2O.  In order to ensure that Stephanie's vision would not be compromised again, we decided to have her undergo Optic Nerve Sheath Fenestration surgery.  Essentially the surgeon would cut slits into her optic nerves, therefore allowing cerebral spinal fluid to drain instead of building up pressure behind her eyes.  This wouldn't decrease her overall intracranial pressure, but if successful, it would at least eliminate the chance of hemorrhaging of her optic discs.

This was a day surgery and Stephanie rested at home for a few days before going back to school.  She had stitches in the inner corners of her eyes and as you can see from the pictures her eyes were red for weeks and weeks afterwards.

December 15, 2010 - Waking up in hospital after surgery.

December 16, 2010 - Day after surgery, resting and some bleeding

Weeks following surgery - getting better every day and spirits were high!
