March 2011 4th Visit to Hospital - Seizures Suspected

Not 3 months after her Optic Nerve Sheath Fenestration surgery, on March 15, 2011, I took Stephanie to the emergency room because we had suspected that she was having seizures.  In 2005 she had 2 grand mal seizures within a 2 month span but she hadn't experienced any seizure activity since.  Even her EEG in the hospital the previous July was normal.  But here we were early one morning because I thought I had seen two strange episodes before bringing her to school and staff at school had also reported two strange episodes that morning.  I decided to pick her up and bring her in.

Of course the neurologist on call (not our regular neurologist) doubted our suspicions of seizures as we descirbed them.  You could just tell that he didn't really believe anything important would come out of further testing.  Stephanie sat on that examining table in the ER for 12 hours before they conducted an EEG.  Sure enough, even during the procedure they caught seizure activity.  Her EEG report was very abnormal.

Stephanie was admitted that night and a 24 hour video EEG was set up the next day.  We were in hospital for about 5 days, I received seizure training and Stephanie was started on a new medication, Valproic Acid.

Here we go, like she needed MORE challenges...

Stephanie had moments of having a love/hate relationship with that black electrical pack she had to carry...lol.    She either tried to throw it off the bed (even though it didn't go far since it was attached to her head) or she held it and cared for it like a baby.
